How to Split the Electricity Bill: By Usage, Meter, or Equally?

Maya runs a space heater all winter. Leo works from home on two monitors. Priya is barely ever home. Splitting the electricity bill evenly punishes Priya for energy she never used — and hands Maya a discount on her heater. Here is the fair way to do it.

The fairness rule

Pay in proportion to the usage you can measure; split the rest equally. Fixed supply charges, line rental, and common-area lighting are shared costs. The energy you personally consume is yours — especially heating, cooling, and big appliances in private rooms.

Method 1: By usage (most fair)

Estimate each person’s usage in kWh: appliance wattage × hours used ÷ 1,000. Room AC and heaters are usually the big ones — a 1,000W space heater running 4 hours a day uses 120 kWh a month.

Worked example: $150 electricity bill, three roommates.

  • Fixed supply charge: $30.00 → $10.00 each (shared cost)
  • Energy: 600 kWh × $0.20/kWh = $120.00
  • Maya: 240 kWh × $0.20 = $48.00 + $10.00 = $58.00
  • Leo: 200 kWh × $0.20 = $40.00 + $10.00 = $50.00
  • Priya: 160 kWh × $0.20 = $32.00 + $10.00 = $42.00

Total: $58.00 + $50.00 + $42.00 = $150.00.

Method 2: Sub-meters (simplest long-term)

Clip-on energy monitors or plug-in meters ($15–30 each) on each bedroom’s heavy loads remove all guessing. Agree at the start of the lease which loads are metered and which fall under the shared portion.

Method 3: Equal split (when usage is genuinely similar)

If nobody has a heater, AC, or mining rig and usage is within about 10–15% of each other, just split it evenly. The point of the usage method is to fix real imbalances, not to create accounting homework.

The common mistake

Splitting the whole bill evenly when one person drives most of the usage. In the example above, an even split would be $50 each — Maya would underpay by $8 and Priya would overpay by $8 every month. The real mistake, though, is guessing instead of measuring: plug-in meters end the argument permanently.

Run the numbers for your bill

The Electricity Bill Splitter handles usage-based, meter-based, and equal splits. Pair it with the monthly roommate settlement system to roll electricity into one clean monthly settle-up with your other shared bills.
