How It Works

1

Enter the bill and the charge

Type the subtotal before charges, then the service charge percentage printed on the bill (auto gratuity included).

2

Decide on an extra tip

If the service charge already covers the gratuity, leave the extra tip at 0% to avoid double-tipping.

3

Split it evenly

Each person’s share is the full total divided by the number of people, rounded fairly to the cent.

Worked Example

Four friends split a $200 bill that carries an 18% service charge. The charge is $36, so they set the extra tip to 0% — tipping on top would mean tipping twice. The total is $236, which is $59.00 each.

Item Amount
Subtotal $200.00
Service charge (18%) $36.00
Extra tip (0%) $0.00
Bill total $236.00
Each person (4 people) $59.00

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a service charge versus a tip?

A service charge is added automatically by the restaurant and is part of the bill you legally owe. A tip is voluntary and added by you. Many large-party “auto gratuities” are actually service charges — check the receipt before adding more.

Why does the calculator warn about double-tipping?

If the bill already includes, say, an 18% service charge and you add another 18% tip, the staff effectively receives 36%. The warning appears whenever both a service charge and an extra tip are above 0%, so you can make a deliberate choice.

What if everyone wants to tip on top anyway?

You can — just enter the extra tip percentage and the calculator adds it. The warning is there to make sure it is intentional, not an accident.
