Splitting a Trip in Multiple Currencies: How to Agree a Conversion Rule (Our Calculator Does Not Convert)
Important: our bill-splitting calculators work in a single currency per calculation — they do not convert between currencies. If your group spent in several currencies, agree a conversion rule first, convert every expense to one common currency yourself, and only then run the numbers. This guide shows you how.
The problem: one trip, three currencies
Maya, Leo, and Priya take a long weekend across a border. They pay in USD, EUR, and THB on different days. At the end, nobody agrees what anything “really” cost, because the exchange rate moved and everyone did their own mental math. The fix is not a better calculator — it is a shared conversion rule agreed before anyone settles up.
Step 1: pick one settlement currency
Choose the currency most people already hold — usually the home currency of the majority. In this example the group settles in USD. Every expense paid in another currency will be converted to USD with the agreed rule.
Step 2: agree one conversion rule (in writing)
Pick one of these, and post it in the group chat before the trip:
- A single daily rate: use one published rate (your bank’s or a free rate source) from a fixed day — e.g. “we convert everything at the rate on the last day of the trip.”
- The rate on each expense’s date: fairer when rates move a lot, but more work.
- A flat agreed rate: e.g. “we’ll use 1 EUR = 1.10 USD for everything.” Simplest; everyone sees the rounding.
Rule 1 is the sweet spot for most trips: one rate, no daily bookkeeping.
Worked example: $620.40 across three currencies
The group agrees: settle in USD, convert everything at the single rate on the final day — 1 EUR = 1.08 USD, 1 THB = 0.030 USD.
- Maya paid €200.00 (hotel) → 200 × 1.08 = $216.00
- Leo paid ฿6,000 (ferry + tours) → 6,000 × 0.030 = $180.00
- Priya paid $224.40 (meals, paid in USD) → $224.40
Trip total: $216.00 + $180.00 + $224.40 = $620.40. Split 3 ways: $620.40 ÷ 3 = $206.80 each.
- Maya paid $216.00 → overpaid $9.20
- Leo paid $180.00 → owes $26.80
- Priya paid $224.40 → overpaid $17.60
Minimum transfers: Leo sends $26.80 to Priya, and $9.20 to Maya. Run these converted numbers through the Group Expense Settle-Up Calculator — enter each person’s converted total as their “paid” amount and it computes the minimum transfers automatically.
Who bears the conversion fees?
The person who paid in a foreign currency usually absorbed a card or ATM fee already. Two fair options:
- Payer absorbs it — simplest, and the default if you don’t discuss it.
- Add it as its own expense — if the fee is large (say $15 on an ATM withdrawal), the payer adds “ATM fee $15” as a shared expense in the settlement.
Pick one rule per trip and write it down with the conversion rule. See our guide to how groups actually pay for settling once the amounts are set.
The common mistake
Converting each person’s share after splitting in different currencies — or worse, splitting in currency A and paying in currency B at “whatever the rate is now.” Rates move; only the rate in the agreed rule counts. And remember: the calculator never converts for you. Convert first, then calculate.
